About
Donsol is a small town located in the Sorsogon province of the Philippines, renowned for its pristine natural environment and unique ecotourism opportunities.
Using their natural resources and partnering with relevant social sectors such as WWF PH as their environmental guardian, the municipality of Donsol, has headed the development of tourism programs like the Whale Shark Interaction.
With the steady presence of whale sharks in the area they acquired the help of WWF PH to ensure the proper handling and training of the locals to handle situations themselves that would be encountered.
WWF’s Programs together with the integrated Conservation for Donsol provides items they have formulated to help the community with their waste reduction such as PLANT DOXES, WATER TANKS for the storage of rain water, COASTAL CLEAN UPS that attracts international touriststo help during their annual activity of cleaning up the municipally’s shorelines.
The transformation of Donsol began in the 1990s when whale sharks (locally known as “butanding“) were discovered to frequent the coastal waters. This led to the development of ecotourism as a major industry.

Today, the town has continued to develop its ecotourism offerings, including firefly watching, scuba diving, and community-based tourism.
